I recommend using the sweet herb stevia in place of sugar. A purified form is marketed as "Truvia", and it tastes very good. We use it every day in our oatmeal and smoothies.

Dark chocolate is actually very good for diabetics, though of course milk chocolate and other chocolates rich in sugar should be avoided. Many doctors recommend it for this purpose.

Strawberries are also fine, they are low on sugar despite their sweet taste.
